Bateleur's Nest Lodge was created as a result of the shared enthusiasm of two cousins – Erich and Gijs. Our passion for adventure, wildlife, and the South African bushveld led to the transformation of a simple game farm into the luxurious and exclusive safari destination it is today. This is our story…
A shared vision ...
Our journey begins in the mid-1960s when a group of visionary landowners residing along the picturesque Klaserie River embarked on a groundbreaking endeavour. Fuelled by their passion for wildlife and conservation, these forward-thinking individuals united their farms, birthing the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve.
Months of discussions and negotiations ensued, until finally, in 1969, their shared vision was embraced by all. The amalgamation of their lands into a single reserve became a turning point in the preservation of the region's natural beauty. It was a testament to the power of collaboration and a symbol of their unwavering commitment to the wildlife that called this land home.
In 1972, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve was officially registered and promulgated, solidifying its place in history. As the years passed, the reserve's reputation soared, its dedication to conservation earning it a rightful place alongside the esteemed Kruger National Park. Thus, the reserve became an integral part of the illustrious Greater Kruger Park, a sanctuary of unparalleled natural wonders.

Meanwhile, Erich and Gijs, cousins bonded by a shared love for adventure and the untamed wilderness, embarked on a transformative journey of their own. Their paths led them to the Kruger National Park, where the captivating landscapes and abundant wildlife stole their hearts. Immersed in the wild environment, a seed was planted.
The cousins' shared experiences and appreciation for the untamed led them to a pivotal moment in 2016—an opportunity that would forever alter their lives. Erich’s purchase of Bateleur’s Nest Lodge was the realisation of a lifetime dream for him. With his family, Gijs and Sally by his side, they poured their hearts and souls into the lodge, meticulously crafting an oasis of vintage charm amidst the untamed African wilderness.
